Where it came from
Burrowing was originally released in the 1994 Mirage expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, designed by the core team at Wizards of the Coast. As a card that allows a player to grant a land the ability to be unblockable, it reflects the whimsical and often experimental mechanical landscape of early Magic sets, which focused heavily on creative utility and unconventional board interactions.
The 30th Anniversary Edition, which includes this version of Burrowing as card number 135, was released in 2022 to commemorate three decades of the franchise. While the art remains consistent with the original aesthetic, the set is printed with a distinct commemorative back and gold-bordered front to differentiate these non-tournament-legal collectibles from the original printings, appealing primarily to long-time collectors seeking a retrospective of the game's expansive history.
