Prodigal Sorcerer

The Prodigal Sorcerer, colloquially known as Tim in the Magic: The Gathering community, was first printed in the 1993 Alpha set. As a staple of early blue control decks, its design by Dan Frazier features the iconic wizard capable of dealing direct damage, a mechanic that defined the tactical utility of blue cards during the game's formative years. The 30th Anniversary Edition, released in 2022, was created as a non-tournament-legal commemorative celebration of the game's history, faithfully reproducing the original artwork and frame aesthetics to honor the legacy of the Reserved List cards that shaped the hobby.

For the 30th Anniversary Edition, the design team opted for a retro-frame aesthetic that serves as a visual bridge between modern printing technology and the nostalgia of the mid-1990s. While these cards were received with mixed sentiment regarding their tournament legality and premium price point, they are widely recognized by collectors as high-fidelity archival recreations of the original game pieces. The card remains a definitive example of early creature design, prioritizing board control and utility over the raw power levels seen in later expansions.
