Burst Lightning

Burst Lightning was released in 2009 as part of the Zendikar set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the Zendikar block was designed around the theme of exploration and high-risk adventure, introducing mechanics like landfall that rewarded players for aggressively expanding their board state. As a common instant, the card was intended to provide red decks with a versatile, low-cost removal option that scaled effectively into the late game.

The artwork was commissioned from Vance Kovacs, whose contribution reflects the set's rugged, dangerous aesthetic. Kovacs employed a kinetic, visceral style to depict the magical discharge, aiming to capture the sudden, volatile nature of the spell's effect on the battlefield. Upon its debut, the card was widely received as a staple for red-aligned players, serving as a functional spiritual successor to the iconic Lightning Bolt and becoming a frequently utilized card in both limited and constructed formats.
