Burst Lightning

Burst Lightning was originally printed in the 2009 Magic: The Gathering expansion Zendikar, designed as a versatile burn spell. Within the game’s mechanics, it offers a dual functionality: it serves as a low-cost, efficient removal option in its base form, or it can be 'kicked' by paying additional mana to deal significantly higher damage, reflecting the set’s focus on the adventure-seeking, high-stakes atmosphere of the Zendikar plane.

The artwork was commissioned from Vance Kovacs, whose illustration style emphasizes the visceral, elemental energy of the spell. By depicting the crackling surge of lightning through his signature painterly approach, Kovacs aimed to capture the raw volatility of the magic. As a common card, it became a staple in limited play environments, valued by players for its tactical flexibility during intense gameplay scenarios.

The version from 'The List' is a re-release curated by Wizards of the Coast for inclusion in Set Boosters. This initiative serves to integrate legacy cards back into the modern ecosystem, allowing players to encounter historical designs within newer product packs. The inclusion of the MM2-109 numbering reflects its cross-set history, as it appeared previously in the Modern Masters 2015 Edition before being curated into this rotating selection.
