Where it came from
Burst Lightning was originally printed in the Worldwake expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 2010, designed as a flexible burn spell that functioned as a low-cost removal tool in the early game and a powerful finisher when kicked in the late game. Its inclusion in the 2021 Secrets of Strixhaven Mystical Archive set was part of a special, high-profile subset of iconic instants and sorceries from across the game's history, chosen to celebrate the release of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion.
The art for this specific printing was commissioned to match the aesthetic of the Mystical Archive, which features a distinct, ornate frame inspired by historical archives and ancient texts. The illustrative style leans into the dramatic and arcane themes of the set, utilizing high-contrast visuals to depict the kinetic energy of the spell. Upon its release, these cards were highly sought after by collectors and competitive players alike for their unique, ethereal design language and their functional utility in various formats.
