Where it came from
By Force was released as part of the Secret Lair Drop Series, a curated line of premium Magic: The Gathering cards introduced by Wizards of the Coast in 2019. This particular card was featured in the 'Showcase: Midnight Hunt' drop, which celebrated the aesthetic themes of the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt expansion. The drop was designed to provide players and collectors with alternative, stylistically distinct versions of cards that emphasize the Gothic horror motifs central to the set.
The artwork for this version of By Force was created by illustrators who utilized a distinct ink-heavy, monochrome style consistent with the 'Eternal Night' showcase frame. This design approach was intended to evoke the eerie atmosphere of a cursed plane, featuring high-contrast visuals that depart significantly from standard card art. The release was received as a stylistic departure from traditional Magic design, appealing specifically to collectors who prioritize artistic consistency and thematic presentation within their card libraries.
