Where it came from
By Force was released in 2017 as part of the Amonkhet expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set is themed around a desert plane inspired by ancient Egyptian mythology, where the tyrannical dragon planeswalker Nicol Bolas enforces a brutal regimen to prepare an army for his own purposes. This red-aligned sorcery spell, which allows a player to destroy any number of artifacts, reflects the aggressive and destructive nature of the set's trials and the overwhelming force utilized by its antagonists.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who has contributed artwork to the game for many years. Kieryluk’s design for this piece focuses on the visceral impact of magical devastation, capturing the moment of shattering destruction that the card’s mechanics describe. Upon its release, the card became a notable utility spell in various formats, valued for its flexible scalability in addressing multiple threats on the battlefield at once.
