Where it came from
Bygone Marvels was released as part of the The Lost Caverns of Ixalan Commander set in late 2023. As a card within the Commander format, it was designed specifically to support multiplayer gameplay, reflecting the set’s overarching themes of subterranean exploration, mesoamerican-inspired aesthetics, and the discovery of ancient, powerful artifacts hidden within the titular cavern system.
The card’s illustration contributes to the set's high-fantasy archaeological tone, emphasizing the weathered and mystical nature of lost technology. Like much of the artwork in the Ixalan block, the design process focused on immersive world-building, aiming to evoke a sense of curiosity and scale. The piece was well-received by players for its utility in graveyard-focused strategies and its contribution to the set’s distinct visual identity.
