Where it came from
Vona, Butcher of Magan, was originally introduced in the Rivals of Ixalan expansion in 2018 as a legendary vampire knight. This specific iteration, collector number 293, is a reprint featured within The Lost Caverns of Ixalan Commander set, which was released in 2023. The character originates from the plane of Ixalan, a setting heavily inspired by Mesoamerican cultures, where Vona serves as a high-ranking cleric within the Legion of Dusk, a group characterized by their colonial aspirations and rigid, religious vampire hierarchy.
The card’s design reflects Vona's role as a proactive and aggressive tactician, utilizing a high mana cost and a life-payment ability to remove threats from the battlefield. In the context of the Commander format, the card is recognized for its thematic resonance with the Orzhov color identity—black and white—which balances life gain and resource drain. The artwork, consistent with the aesthetic of the Legion of Dusk, portrays the character with an ornate, gilded aesthetic that emphasizes both her martial prowess and her status as a vessel for the church’s influence on the plane.
