Cabal Torturer

Cabal Torturer was released in 2002 as part of the Torment expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed with a heavy focus on the black color of mana, reflecting the storyline of the Otarian continent where the Cabal, a shadowy organization of power-brokers and cultists, held significant sway. As a common creature, the card was intended to provide utility within the set’s mechanics, emphasizing the attrition and sacrifice themes prevalent in the Cabal’s dark aesthetic.

The card’s illustration was created by Pete Venters, a prolific artist who contributed to the game for many years. Venters focused on capturing the gruesome, clinical nature of the Cabal’s interrogators, using the dark, muted color palette characteristic of the Torment set.
