Spirit Flare

Spirit Flare was released in February 2002 as part of the Torment expansion set for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed to explore the mechanics of a dark, subterranean world, focusing heavily on black mana and graveyard recursion. This specific card, a red instant, was intended to provide players with a way to manipulate the game state by returning cards from the graveyard to the hand, a utility effect that reinforced the set's thematic preoccupation with death and rebirth.

The card features artwork by artist Heather Hudson, whose illustrative style during the early 2000s helped define the visual identity of the Torment set. Hudson's design aimed to convey the fleeting, ethereal nature of a 'spirit flare' through vibrant color and motion. While the card is not considered a powerhouse in competitive formats, it remains a notable piece of the Torment expansion, reflecting the period's experimental approach to color-pie mechanics and the specific dark aesthetic requested by the art directors of the era.
