Calming Licid

Calming Licid was released in 1998 as part of the Stronghold expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on the narrative of the Weatherlight crew infiltrating the stronghold of the villain Volrath. As a member of the Licid creature cycle, the card showcased a unique mechanics-heavy design that allowed creatures to transition into Enchantment Auras, reflecting the shifting and transformative nature of the Phyrexians' laboratory experiments.

The card's art was provided by Daren Bader, whose work during the late 1990s helped define the visual identity of the game’s more surreal and organic threats. Bader’s illustration sought to capture the unsettling, fluid biology of the Licids, prioritizing an eerie, otherworldly aesthetic that became a hallmark of the Stronghold set. Upon release, the card was noted primarily for its complex rules interactions, which challenged players to navigate the nuances of the game's layer system.
