Careful Study

Careful Study was originally released as part of the Odyssey expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game in 2001. Designed as a blue sorcery, the card allows players to draw two cards and discard two, a powerful effect for graveyard-focused archetypes. The artwork was illustrated by Franz Vohwinkel, whose distinct, painterly style helped define the visual identity of the Odyssey block.

The 2002 World Championship Decks provided players with exact replicas of the decks used by the top eight finishers at the World Championships. This specific printing of Careful Study comes from the deck piloted by Simon Gortzen, who reached the top eight that year. These cards are easily identified by their unique gold-bordered frames and the player's signature printed on the face, marking them as commemorative artifacts rather than standard tournament-legal playing cards.
