Where it came from
Carth the Lion was introduced as part of the Modern Horizons 2 expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, released by Wizards of the Coast in 2021. Designed specifically for the Commander format, the card features the legendary hero of the Benalish army from Magic's deep lore. Its development sought to revitalize older characters from the game’s early narratives, integrating their story-driven history with mechanics that emphasize the Planeswalker card type.
The artwork was illustrated by Jason Rainville, who aimed to portray the character as a seasoned, battle-worn veteran representative of Dominaria’s struggle against the Phyrexians. Upon its debut, the card was well-received by players focusing on 'Superfriends' style decks, which prioritize the use of multiple Planeswalker cards. It is valued by the community both for its thematic ties to classic Magic history and its synergistic utility in complex card interactions.
