Where it came from
Carth the Lion was introduced in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Modern Horizons 2, a product designed specifically for the Modern format and high-power gameplay environments. As a legendary creature featuring the planeswalker-support mechanic, the card was created to provide a dedicated commander for players interested in synergistic deck-building around loyalty abilities. The character, a Benalish hero from Magic's deep lore, was brought into the spotlight to appeal to long-time fans who appreciated the return of older narrative figures.
The card's artwork, illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, captures Carth’s stoic and battle-hardened demeanor. Villeneuve focused on depicting him as a seasoned protector, utilizing a color palette that aligns with his green-black color identity to emphasize his grounded, earth-based power. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its specialized utility, securing its place as a staple for players who prioritize planeswalker-focused strategies in their deck construction.
