Where it came from
Carth the Lion was originally introduced in the Modern Horizons 2 expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released in June 2021. Designed to inject direct-to-Modern power into the format, the card serves as a dedicated tribal support piece for planeswalkers, specifically rewarding players for building decks around their loyalty abilities. The set was conceived as a love letter to Magic's deep history, featuring callbacks to various lore characters, with Carth representing the legendary warrior from the Dominarian era.
The promotional version, designated 189s, features the distinct retro frame aesthetic that Wizards of the Coast utilized for the Modern Horizons 2 special treatments. The art was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who utilized his signature ethereal and highly detailed style to capture the warrior's stalwart nature. This specific treatment was received warmly by collectors who favored a nostalgic look while maintaining the high-impact card mechanics intended for tournament play.
