Where it came from
Cast Out was released in 2017 as part of the Amonkhet expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set introduced a desert-themed plane inspired by Ancient Egyptian mythology, where the mechanics focused on themes of trial, preservation, and divine judgment. This specific card was designed as a versatile removal spell, featuring the 'cycling' mechanic that allowed players to discard the card in exchange for drawing a new one, providing strategic flexibility during matches.
The card's striking illustration was created by artist Johannes Voss. Voss intended to capture the dramatic scale and divine intervention central to the set's narrative, depicting a follower being forcibly removed or banished by an unseen celestial force. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the competitive community for its utility, often appearing in white-based control decks due to its ability to handle a wide range of permanent types at instant speed.
