Where it came from
Cast Through Time was released in 2010 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Rise of the Eldrazi. The set was designed to shift the game’s tone toward a monumental, apocalyptic struggle, featuring the introduction of the Eldrazi, gargantuan interdimensional entities. This particular card was intended to mechanically represent the manipulation of temporal flow, allowing players to utilize the rebound keyword to cast the same spell twice, effectively extending the impact of a single decision across multiple turns.
The card’s artwork was created by illustrator Matt Cavotta, who sought to capture the ethereal and fluid nature of time manipulation through a surreal, dreamlike composition. Its design was praised by the player community for its unique utility in control-oriented decks, where its ability to trigger powerful effects repeatedly provided a significant tactical advantage. While it is not a staple in the most competitive formats, it remains a beloved example of the high-mana, high-impact design philosophy central to the Rise of the Eldrazi expansion.
