Where it came from
Cavalier of Gales was released in 2019 as part of the Core Set 2020 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This card, a mythic rare elemental knight, was featured as a promo variant with unique promotional art and a distinct collector number (52s). It emerged during a period where Wizards of the Coast was experimenting with various ways to distribute alternate-art versions of cards to players through local game store events and promotional releases.
The artwork for this particular iteration was crafted by illustrator Greg Staples, who is known for his atmospheric and detailed approach to fantasy character design. His vision for the Cavalier of Gales focused on the elemental nature of the creature, blending fluid motion with the rigid aesthetics of plate armor. Upon its release, the card was well-received by competitive players for its utility in controlling the library and providing a resilient threat on the battlefield, securing its place as a staple of that competitive season.
