Provenance

Where it came from

The Cephalid Snitch was released in 2002 as part of the Torment expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was notable for its heavy emphasis on the color black, shifting the mechanical balance of the game during the Odyssey block. The card represents the cephalid race, an aquatic species introduced in the Odyssey set, depicted here in a role consistent with their opportunistic and secretive nature in the game's lore.

The illustration was created by artist Christopher Moeller, who captured the creature's eerie, amphibious aesthetic. Moeller's work for this period often focused on moody, atmospheric lighting to fit the darker tone of the Torment set. As a common card, it was designed primarily to serve as a low-cost utility piece in limited formats, and it remains a representative example of the visual and mechanical design philosophy prevalent in early 2000s Magic: The Gathering.
