Provenance

Where it came from

Hypochondria was released in 2002 as part of the Torment expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set within the dark, planar geography of the underworld known as the Cabal's domain, the set focused heavily on black mana and themes of decay and psychological distress. As an enchantment, the card mechanically represents the lingering, self-perpetuating nature of the titular ailment, forcing players to sacrifice life to avoid damage.

The artwork was commissioned from Christopher Moeller, a celebrated illustrator for the game known for his expressive, painterly style. Moeller aimed to visually capture the paranoia and perceived physical deterioration associated with hypochondria. By depicting a figure tormented by phantom afflictions in a dim, claustrophobic setting, the illustration successfully resonated with the set's broader exploration of internal and external suffering, earning recognition for its atmospheric storytelling.
