Where it came from
Plagiarize was released in February 2002 as part of the Torment set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was famously designed to focus on the color black, emphasizing themes of death, morbidity, and psychological manipulation, which aligned with the game's broader narrative set on the bleak, planar world of Otaria.
The card was illustrated by Anthony S. Waters, a prolific artist for the game during this era. Waters utilized a visceral, illustrative style intended to convey the intellectual theft and chaotic energy represented by the card's mechanics, which allow a player to copy an opponent's spell. Upon its release, the card was noted by players for its disruptive potential and its thematic fit within the tricky, resource-draining gameplay style encouraged by the Torment expansion.
