Where it came from
Chainer, Dementia Master first appeared in the 2002 Magic: The Gathering expansion Torment. The character was central to the Odyssey block storyline, serving as a powerful dementia summoner within the Cabal pits of Otaria. The card was designed to reflect his ability to manipulate the graveyard as a resource, a hallmark of black-aligned mechanics that emphasize life cost for recurring power.
The Dominaria Remastered version, released in 2023, serves as a curated update to this classic design. Featuring fresh illustration by Jason Felix, the card retains the original mechanical identity while integrating into the modern visual aesthetic of the Remastered series. The set was designed to condense iconic cards from across Dominaria's history, and Chainer was included to provide players with a familiar, high-synergy tool for graveyard-focused archetypes.
