Chainer, Dementia Master // Chainer, Dementia Master

Chainer, Dementia Master first appeared in the 2002 Magic: The Gathering expansion Torment. Designed by the development team during the Odyssey block, the character was central to the set's narrative as a cabal pit fighter who utilized nightmare magic to manipulate the graveyard. The card is mechanically significant for its ability to reanimate creatures at the cost of life, reflecting the high-risk, high-reward theme of the set.

This specific iteration is part of the Commander Masters Art Series, a collection of oversized art cards released in 2023. These items are designed to highlight the illustrative talent behind the game, focusing on the visual storytelling rather than gameplay mechanics. The original artwork for this card was updated to suit the contemporary aesthetic of the Masters release, providing a fresh perspective on a classic character favored by long-time players of the black color identity.
