Where it came from
Chainer, Dementia Master first appeared in the 2002 Magic: The Gathering set Torment, representing the tragic protagonist of the novel Chainer's Torment. Set on the plane of Otaria, the narrative follows a pit fighter who gains the ability to manifest nightmares into reality using the Mirari artifact, only to succumb to the madness caused by his own creations. The character was designed to showcase black-aligned mechanics that bridge the gap between graveyard recursion and life-cost limitations.
This specific iteration from Dominaria Remastered, released in 2023, features updated card frame technology and thematic curation meant to celebrate the history of the Dominaria setting. The illustration is a contemporary reimagining that retains the character's iconic appearance—characterized by his distinctive cowl and the ethereal, horrific projections of his dementia-fueled abilities—while aligning with the high-definition art standards of modern Magic releases. It remains a popular staple in the Commander format due to its unique, high-risk playstyle.
