Where it came from
Chainer, Nightmare Adept was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 set, a supplemental Magic: The Gathering product designed to introduce cards directly into the Modern format. The character of Chainer first appeared in the Odyssey block, serving as a tragic figure in the lore of the Otarian continent who lost his sanity after wielding the power of the Mirari. This specific iteration reimagines him as a powerful graveyard-focused utility creature, reflecting his thematic mastery over nightmares and resurrection.
The card illustration was created by artist Zack Stella, who opted for a dynamic composition that highlights Chainer's signature chain-wielding aesthetic and dark magical signature. The design process for Modern Horizons 2 aimed to balance nostalgia for established characters with high-power mechanics suitable for competitive play, and this version of Chainer was well-received by players for its synergy with discard and reanimation strategies in Commander and other eternal formats.
