Where it came from
Chainer, Nightmare Adept was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 set, serving as a reimagining of the classic character Chainer from the Odyssey block. Wizards of the Coast designed this iteration to capture the character's mastery over dementia magic and the Nightmare creatures he famously wielded, updating his mechanics to function within the high-power environment of Modern-legal supplemental sets. The card was created to provide players with a graveyard-focused commander option that emphasizes resource recursion.
The illustration for this specific printing was rendered by artist Zack Stella, who sought to convey Chainer's unsettling and obsessive connection to the void. The design utilizes a distinctive aesthetic that aligns with the specialized card frames featured in Modern Horizons 2, distinguishing it from standard set releases. Upon its debut, the card was well-received by the Magic: The Gathering community, particularly among fans of graveyard-centric strategies who appreciated its utility and lore-accurate design.
