Where it came from
Chainer, Nightmare Adept was released in 2019 as part of the Commander 2019 supplemental set for Magic: The Gathering. This card serves as a reimagined version of the legendary character Chainer, a dementia summoner from the Odyssey block who originally appeared in 2002. The design aims to capture his mastery over the graveyard and his ability to reanimate fallen creatures, translating his lore-heavy narrative into a cohesive gameplay engine for the Commander format.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by Chase Stone, who opted for a visceral, high-contrast aesthetic that emphasizes the character's shadowy, necrotic powers. Stone sought to convey the chaotic essence of Chainer’s magic while maintaining a sense of controlled intensity. Upon release, the card was widely received by the player community as a balanced and flavorful commander, praised for its synergy with discard-heavy strategies and its faithful nod to the original incarnation of the character.
