Where it came from
Champion of Dusk was released as part of the Rivals of Ixalan set in early 2018, serving as a powerful rare creature within the expansion's tribal-focused mechanics. The card features the Vampire faction of the plane of Ixalan, a setting heavily inspired by Mesoamerican history and colonial-era exploration myths. It was designed to provide the Orzhov-aligned vampires with a significant card-advantage engine, rewarding players for assembling a wide board of smaller vampire creatures.
The artwork for this card was illustrated by Greg Staples, an artist known for his dark and atmospheric fantasy style. His design depicts a towering, regal vampire figure exuding an aura of command, which perfectly captures the high-stakes, gothic-exploration aesthetic that Wizards of the Coast aimed for during the Ixalan block. The promotional version, distinguished by its gold-stamped set symbol and unique border, was primarily distributed through local game store events as a participation reward, making it a functional collectible for players who appreciate the thematic cohesion of the set.
