Champion of Lambholt

Champion of Lambholt first appeared in the Avacyn Restored expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2012, designed to represent a protector of the human population in the horror-themed plane of Innistrad. The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who utilized a painterly, atmospheric style to capture the character's role as a warrior emerging from the shadows to lead a rebellion against the supernatural threats plaguing the region. Mechanically, the card was lauded for its ability to grow in power while simultaneously making creatures harder to block, a combination that made it a resilient threat in both casual and competitive formats.

The version included in the Midnight Hunt Commander set was released to coincide with a return to the Innistrad setting, specifically highlighting the thematic connection between the human resistance and the ongoing struggle against the monstrous denizens of the plane. By reprinting the card in a Commander-focused product, Wizards of the Coast acknowledged its status as a staple for green-aligned decks that rely on creature swarms and board presence. Its inclusion provided players with updated access to a card that remains a practical and narratively relevant piece of the Innistrad lore.
