Chandra, Acolyte of Flame

Chandra, Acolyte of Flame was introduced in the Core Set 2020 expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released in July 2019. The set was specifically designed to center around the iconic pyromancer planeswalker Chandra Nalaar, featuring three distinct versions of her card to illustrate different stages of her growth. This particular promo version, numbered 126p, features unique alternative art by Magali Villeneuve, who was commissioned to provide a more narrative, character-focused aesthetic that distinguished the promo from the standard card frame found in booster packs.

The card mechanics, which allow for the temporary creation of Elemental tokens and the reactivation of instant or sorcery spells from the graveyard, were designed to capture Chandra’s impulsive and fire-oriented nature. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency in aggressive deck archetypes. The promo version, often distributed through Wizards of the Coast’s organized play programs or as participation rewards, became a sought-after collectible for fans of the character, valued for Villeneuve’s evocative illustration style which emphasizes a softer, more introspective take on the typically volatile character.
