Where it came from
Bishop of Wings was released as part of the Core Set 2020 expansion for Magic: The Gathering, specifically featured as a promotional card. The card was designed to support tribal synergy for Angel decks, a popular archetype that rewards players for building themes around specific creature types. The Core Set 2020 promotional series was distributed through various organized play channels, intended to incentivize engagement with local game stores during the set's release window.
The artwork for this piece was created by Johannes Voss, whose contributions to the Magic: The Gathering aesthetic are noted for their ethereal lighting and emotive character depictions. Voss aimed to capture the protective and life-restoring nature of the card's mechanics, utilizing a palette that emphasizes divine, celestial light. The card was well-received by players for its efficiency in white-based life gain decks, solidifying its place as a staple in various constructed formats.
