Provenance

Where it came from

Change of Fortune was released in late 2021 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Innistrad: Crimson Vow. This set focused on the gothic horror themes of the Innistrad plane, specifically centering on a vampire wedding. Mechanically, the card was designed as a red sorcery intended to help players manage their hand and deck efficiency through a discard-and-draw cycle, fitting into the set's broader emphasis on graveyard synergies and blood-themed mechanics.

The artwork for the standard version was created by illustrator Caio Monteiro. The design leans into the dramatic, high-stakes aesthetic of the set, featuring a character navigating the chaotic, opulent, and dangerous environment of a vampire gathering. Upon release, the card was evaluated by the competitive community primarily for its potential in graveyard-reliant decks, noted for its ability to filter cards while triggering various discard-based effects common to the plane of Innistrad.
