Provenance

Where it came from

Change of Fortune was released in 2021 as part of the promotional suite for the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Innistrad: Crimson Vow. The card depicts a thematic narrative centered on the gothic horror aesthetic of the plane of Innistrad, specifically focusing on the intersection of human desperation and supernatural influence inherent to the set's vampire-centric storyline.

The artwork for this promotional variant was crafted to lean into the set's ornate, high-society aesthetic, emphasizing the visual motifs associated with the Markov bloodline and the wedding festivities that served as the backdrop for the set. Designed as a functional spell within the game's mechanics, it was distributed through specialized channels like store championships or promotional event kits, intended to serve as a collectible incentive for players engaging with the local game store environment.
