Char deals 4 damage to any target and 2 damage to you.

Where it came from
Char was originally released in the 1994 expansion set Mirage. Designed by Richard Garfield, the card was intended to explore the flavor of Red mana through a high-cost, high-impact direct damage spell. It quickly became a staple in burn-focused decks, balancing its powerful four-damage output with the distinct drawback of dealing two damage to the caster, a hallmark of early Magic design that prioritized aggressive trade-offs.
This specific printing appeared in the 2013 collection From the Vault: Twenty, a commemorative set celebrating the twentieth anniversary of Magic: The Gathering. The reprint featured new, modernized artwork by Aleksi Briclot, who moved away from the surrealist style of the original to a more refined, illustrative aesthetic. The set was widely lauded by collectors for its curated selection of iconic cards that defined the game's history, and this version of Char is noted for its premium foiling process characteristic of the 'From the Vault' product line.
