What it does
Char deals 4 damage to any target and 2 damage to you.
Izzet mages often acquire their magic reagents from dubious sources, so the potency of their spells is never predictable.

Where it came from
Char was released in 2005 as part of the Ravnica: City of Guilds set, the inaugural entry in the Ravnica block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed as a core red burn spell, it was designed to capture the flavor of the Izzet League, a guild known for its chaotic, explosive obsession with magical experimentation. The card's mechanics, which deal four damage to a target while simultaneously dealing two damage to the player, exemplify the high-risk, high-reward philosophy associated with Izzet-aligned spells.
The artwork for this card was illustrated by Dave Kendall, who utilized a distinct, moody aesthetic to represent the raw, destructive energy of the spell. Kendall’s depiction of elemental fire reflects the industrial and frantic nature of Ravnica’s cityscape. Upon its release, the card became a staple in aggressive red-based competitive decks, particularly those utilizing the synergy of the Ravnica block, and it remains a recognized example of early modern-era Magic design.
