Where it came from
Mouth to Mouth was released in 2004 as part of the Unhinged expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. As a parody set, Unhinged was designed to explore humorous, non-traditional gameplay mechanics that would be disallowed in standard competitive tournament rules. The card specifically satirizes the rules of the game by requiring players to physically interact with one another, reflecting the set's experimental and lighthearted approach to the franchise's strict logistical framework.
The card was illustrated by Greg Staples, an artist known for his dark and detailed work within the Magic: The Gathering universe. For this piece, Staples employed a stylistic departure from his usual serious fantasy aesthetic to accommodate the card's comedic premise. The design received notice primarily for its disruptive nature during casual play sessions, cementing its status as a notable example of the subversive and self-aware design philosophy that defined the Unhinged set.
