Where it came from
Chef's Kiss was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed specifically for the Commander format and other supplemental play environments, the card was intended to introduce high-variance, chaotic gameplay elements characterized by the red color identity. The name and mechanical design evoke a playful, tongue-in-cheek sensibility, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of spell-copying mechanics.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Livia Prima, who utilized a vivid, expressive style to capture the culinary-themed metaphor of the card's title. Upon its release, the card received moderate attention from the community for its unique ability to randomly redistribute targets, offering a rare combination of spell protection and potential amplification. It has since become a staple for players who prioritize interactive, randomized effects over traditional competitive efficiency.
