Where it came from
The Chimney Goyf was released as part of the Mystery Booster 2021 Playtest card series, a unique initiative by Wizards of the Coast designed to simulate the feel of prototype or 'playtest' Magic: The Gathering cards. These cards were never intended for official tournament play and feature a distinctive aesthetic that mimics the rough, monochromatic look of R&D testing materials, complete with placeholder art and shorthand mechanics.
The design of the Chimney Goyf is a playful nod to Tarmogoyf, one of the most iconic and powerful creatures in the game's history. By reimagining the card through the lens of a whimsical 'chimney' theme, the designers aimed to demonstrate the experimental, irreverent spirit of the R&D development process. The card was received by the community as a humorous collectible that highlights the creative side of card design outside the constraints of standard set production.
