Where it came from
Enroll in the Coalition was released as part of the Mystery Booster Playtest Cards, a unique set distributed by Wizards of the Coast at events like MagicFest in 2020 and 2021. These cards were designed to evoke the spirit of early playtesting, featuring a distinct, utilitarian aesthetic that intentionally mimicked the look of internal development prototypes. Unlike standard expansion cards, they were never intended for tournament play and were printed with a special 'playtest' stamp to distinguish their experimental nature.
The card was conceived by the Magic: The Gathering R&D team as a meta-commentary on the game's mechanics and the process of card design. Its design is characterized by a stark, white-bordered template that strips away the polished art and framing of modern cards, focusing instead on the raw functionality of its rules text. The card was well-received by collectors and cube enthusiasts who valued its status as a tangible piece of the game's iterative development history.
