Where it came from
Chitterspitter was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 set for Magic: The Gathering. Designed as a direct-to-modern expansion, the set was curated to introduce new cards into the Modern format without them passing through the standard rotation of the main sets. This card specifically reflects the set's emphasis on tribal archetypes, leaning into the popular Squirrel creature type that had been a long-standing fan request for more formal support in competitive play.
The card was illustrated by Phil Stone, who brought a vibrant, whimsical aesthetic to the depiction of the squirrel-themed artifact. The design intent was to provide a repeatable token-generation engine that rewards players for managing a board state filled with small creatures. Upon its release, it was well-received by players building Squirrel-themed decks, serving as a functional cornerstone for those looking to leverage creature sacrifice and token-based strategies.
