Where it came from
Chitterspitter was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was specifically designed to introduce powerful cards directly into the Modern format, bypassing standard set rotation. Within the game's lore, the card represents the prolific and disruptive nature of squirrels, a creature type that received significant mechanical support in this release, shifting from a niche novelty into a viable competitive strategy.
The card features artwork by illustrator Ilse Gort, who captured the chaotic, swarming aesthetic of a squirrel colony. The design team focused on creating a recursive engine that rewards players for managing a battlefield of tokens, emphasizing the synergy-heavy playstyle characteristic of the Modern Horizons series. It was well-received by players who enjoy tribal decks, specifically those aiming to leverage token-based resource management.
