Where it came from
Choking Tethers was originally printed in the 2008 set Shadowmoor, later appearing with updated art in the 2018 Masters 25 set. The card functions as a common-rarity blue instant, reflecting the set's emphasis on hybrid mana costs and mechanics that manipulate the board state, such as tapping creatures and drawing cards. It was designed to provide utility for control-oriented players, offering a versatile way to stall an opponent’s aggression during the combat phase.
The Masters 25 printing features illustration by Izzy, a long-time contributor to the Magic: The Gathering franchise. The artwork captures the ephemeral, restrictive nature of the spell, utilizing a signature high-contrast style that emphasizes the shimmering, magical constraints of the tethers. Upon its release, the set was marketed as a retrospective of the game's history, and the inclusion of this card served as a thematic nod to the unique flavor and mechanical identity of the Shadowmoor block.
