Where it came from
Choking Tethers was released in 2019 as part of the Modern Horizons expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed specifically for the Modern format, allowing Wizards of the Coast to introduce cards directly into the ecosystem without them passing through a standard legal rotation. The set focused on complex mechanics and nostalgia, featuring a mix of new cards and powerful reprints meant to appeal to veteran players.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized a distinct, ethereal style to depict the ensnaring nature of the spell. Mechanically, the card was designed as a blue common with the flashback ability, providing players with a versatile tool for tempo control. Upon its release, it was well-regarded by limited format enthusiasts for its ability to tap down multiple creatures, serving as a functional, utility-focused entry in the set's broader collection.
