Where it came from
Choking Tethers originated in the 2004 set Darksteel, designed for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game by Wizards of the Coast. As an artifact card, it reflects the block's thematic focus on the metallic world of Mirrodin, where the scarcity of organic materials and the influence of the plane's synthetic nature heavily dictated both visual design and mechanical utility.
The card was illustrated by Greg Staples, who utilized a dark, visceral aesthetic to depict the card's function as a restrictive tool. Upon its release, the card was received as a situational piece of utility equipment, noted by players for its role in controlling specific board states, though it has since become primarily a piece of historical interest for collectors following its inclusion in The List, a curated selection of cards reprinted in modern booster packs.
