Where it came from
Chromatic Lantern was originally designed for the Return to Ravnica expansion in 2012 as a powerful utility artifact intended to solve mana fixing issues for multicolored decks. The card quickly became a staple in the Commander format, leading to its inclusion in the Commander 2016 release as part of the four-color preconstructed deck cycle. Its design emphasizes the theme of the Ravnican guildpact, representing the union of all five colors of magic through its ability to allow lands to tap for any color.
The artwork for this specific printing was illustrated by Raoul Vitale, who captured the artifact as a glowing, intricate lantern central to the theme of mana convergence. Upon its release, the card was widely received by the community as an essential tool for stabilizing complex deck builds. By the time it was reprinted in the 2016 set, it had already established itself as one of the most reliable and iconic mana-fixing artifacts in the history of the game.
