The Ninth Edition version, released in 2005, was part of a core set intended to bridge the gap between classic mechanics and modern play, marking a significant moment as it was one of the final core sets to feature white borders.

The Ninth Edition illustration was provided by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and influential artists in the game's early history. His interpretation of the Circle of Protection maintains the solemn, protective aesthetic established in the game's infancy, focusing on the symbolic barrier against the dark forces of black mana.
