Where it came from
Circle of Protection: Black was first introduced in the Limited Edition Alpha set in 1993, later appearing in the Rivals Quick Start Set as part of the broader effort to introduce new players to Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to be a fundamental tool for White mana decks, reflecting the game's color philosophy where White serves as a defensive, protective force against the disruptive and corrupting nature of Black mana.
The card’s iconic, stark illustration was created by Jesper Myrfhøj, whose work captures the solemn, ritualistic essence of the protection spell. Throughout the early history of the game, the 'Circle' series was received as a cornerstone of sideboarding strategy, providing players with a straightforward, repeatable mechanism to mitigate damage from specific enemy color alignments.
