Citanul Woodreaders was originally released in the 1998 Urza's Saga set, designed during a period of Magic: The Gathering history defined by high-power card mechanics and the intricate narrative of the Brothers' War. The card was created as a common-rarity green creature that utilized the cycling mechanic, reflecting the set's focus on versatility and resource management. It eventually appeared in the 2021 Time Spiral Remastered set, which was curated to celebrate and synthesize the mechanics of the game's past, specifically drawing from the original Time Spiral block's nostalgia-heavy design philosophy.

The artwork for the Time Spiral Remastered version was provided by Steven Belledin, who updated the visual depiction of the woodreader.
