Where it came from
Citanul Woodreaders was released in February 2007 as part of the Planar Chaos expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was unique for its alternative-reality theme, which explored how the game's mechanics and color pie might have shifted if historical events in the storyline had transpired differently. The card itself exemplifies the set's experimental nature by blending green-aligned creature utility with a mechanics-heavy focus on the graveyard.
The card features artwork by Christopher Moeller, a prominent illustrator in the Magic: The Gathering community known for his expressive, painterly style. His design for the Woodreaders captures the rustic, grounded aesthetic often associated with the Citanul druids of the game's lore. Upon release, the card was received as a functional tool for limited formats, appreciated for its straightforward ability to draw cards at the cost of sacrificing creatures, reflecting the set's emphasis on utility and strategic resource management.
